Quartzite Quartzite countertops are an actual slab of natural quartzite stone. Quartzite is a
metamorphic rock that starts out life as a quartz-rich sandstone that transforms under intense
heat, pressure, and metamorphic activity. Over time, these factors cause the materials to
recrystallize and reconfigure the quartz grains into an incredibly strong, interlocking structure.
As a natural material, quartzite countertops come in a more limited color palate than quartz,
though they are often multi-hued and can have dramatic marble-like veins. In fact, this is one of
the greatest features of quartzite: it gives you the look of marble, but with more durability.
Soapstone is another natural stone, usually dark gray in color with a smooth, silky feel. It has
seen a recent resurgence as an alternative to granite. Soapstone is often seen in historic homes
but is also used in modern homes as both a countertop and sink material. Over time, soapstone
takes on an antique-like patina that can be very attractive in certain kitchen styles.
Onyx is incredible to behold and comes in a number of colorations. The contrasting colors and
remarkable veining makes onyx countertops a sight to behold. When light hits the countertop, it
is reflected back into the room. Furthermore, you can backlight onyx countertops and create a
marvelous glow in your kitchen or bath not produced by any other type of countertop. Onyx
countertops come in a number of colors. Certain onyx countertops feature beautiful greens,
pinks, purples, and golds, making them the perfect choice for homes. Simply choose one of the
naturally occurring contrasting colors as an accent color to bring your entire room together.
